Reuse of materials: 6 major players in technical inspection and construction insurance join the Booster Project

Bureau Veritas, BTP Consultants, Qualiconsult and Socotec as well as brokers Diot and Marsh announced today that they are joining the Reuse Booster, an initiative of unprecedented scope in favor of materials reuse. Launched in September 2020, the Booster brings together investors, developers and major users, ordering many tertiary worksites.

These new expert partners in construction risk management are the first in their field of expertise to tackle a major problem: taking into account the specific characteristics and risks of reuse materials, and defining a method to make the practice totally safe.

Their first “project”: the standardization of ‘reuse’ prescription clauses that project owners will be able to integrate into their works contracts. Control offices, design offices and insurance brokers are working together to collectively draft a document for each reuse material, responding to several issues raised by contracting authorities, in particular the batches to be prioritized, the steps and procedures for putting reuse into practice, as well as the carbon impact and its recovery within the framework of the regulations (RE2020).

Several reuse materials are already benefiting from their clauses: false technical floors, sanitary facilities (toilets and basins), removable partitions, carpeting. On the agenda for the coming months: lighting fixtures, mineral and metal false ceilings, railings, BAES…

● To get reuse in construction off the ground (which represents less than 1% of materials used), Booster members have committed to acting directly on their own projects, creating tools and standards that will encourage the market to join them, in a virtuous circle. The operational application on the Booster’s construction sites takes place in parallel to this collective reflection.

● This is the case for the Kalifornia office project (Malakoff, 23,600 sq.m.) led by Bouygues Immobilier. The team motivated by the subject of reuse (Bouygues Immobilier, Atelier 2/3/4/, Kern…) had already integrated some reuse prescriptions in their CCTP false floor and is trying to go further thanks to the booster.

● Similarly, the Société de la Tour Eiffel is in action on two projects of different sizes. On a project in Massy, where the timetable has been brought forward, prescription elements have been able to be integrated on materials that benefit from already structured channels: for example recycled paint with Circouleur. On a second project in Lyon, reuse is being integrated as soon as the property development contract is drawn up.

● Next step: an online platform designed by Fabernovel will make it possible to centralize and standardize the needs for reused materials, which are currently difficult for suppliers to identify.
